Building a Google AdWords advertising campaign has the potential to bring thousands of unique visitors to a website in a matter of minutes.

Building a Google AdWords advertising campaign creates a conduit capable of funneling incredible amounts of traffic to a website from all over the Internet. It can also bankrupt a company very quickly if the pay per click campaign is not set up correctly.

This article details how to set up an AdWords campaign and offers ways to minimize its cost without sacrificing the amount of traffic it can create for a website.

Setting Up a Google AdWords Advertising Campaign in Seven Easy Steps

The first step is to go to the AdWords website and find the "Click to Begin" button. Set up an account by following the instructions regarding login information, time zone and account currency. Once this is done, login to the account and click on "Create Your First Campaign." Then follow the following steps:

  • Give the campaign an easily recognizable game
  • Choose the geographic area the campaign ads will target (whole country vs. hometown)
  • Choose the languages in which the individual campaign ads will appear
  • List any specific demographics the campaign will target (age and gender are the only current available options
  • Pick the devices on which the ads will appear (desktops, cell phones, etc.).
  • Choose a bidding option and a maximum daily advertising budget.
  • Set any advanced options regarding ad schedule and rotation.

This will set up the whole campaign. A new user who is unsure of which options to choose should trust the default settings provided by the software. The only option they have to set themselves is the daily budget.

All other options can initially be left in default position until the user can gain a better grasp on the program. Once a new campaign is set up, it is time to start writing ads.

Writing Google Ads to Get the Most Out of the Pay Per Click Search Engine

Once a new AdWords campaign is setup, it's time to start writing individual ads. Though text ads make up the majority of the ads run by Google, the software gives users the option of creating both text and image ads.

If writing a text ad, follow the following steps:

  • Write a headline and whenever possible, include the keyword the ads is targeting (headlines are limited to 25 characters)
  • Use the description lines (35 characters each) to enter a benefit and a feature of the product, preferably in that order, that is being advertised
  • Enter the URL that will be displayed with the ad (this DOES NOT) have to be the same as the destination URL)
  • Enter the URL that the ad will link to, this URL is called the "landing page"
  • Insert the keywords the ad will reference in the keyword box (DON'T ENTER A HUNDRED DIFFERENT KEYWORDS, start with a few and build the list from there)
  • The placements box can be used to list specific websites on which they want their ad to appear

Keyword Optimization Techniques in Pay Per Click Advertising

For a detailed description of how brackets, quotes, and minus signs can be used to manipulate and better target each keyword, read Four Simple Keyword Optimization Strategies.

New keywords can be added on under-performing keywords removed after writing the ad, and the text of the ad itself can be altered at anytime to increase the performance of the ads. Additionally, the bid price offered by the user for each article can be set individually.

One of the best features about Google AdWords is the ability to change nearly every aspect of a campaign, from the budget to the keywords to the cost per click of each keyword, at any time from any location. This ubiquitous availability allows for constant refinements to the campaign that can have an enormous impact on the amount of traffic the ads generate.
